Natural Remedies for Coughing at Night: A Mom’s Guide to the Wet Socks Method for Sickness-Induced Asthma

As a mom of three who’s spent countless nights in the ER parking lot (and, waiting to go to the ER, and in the ER) watching my kids struggle to breathe, I get it: when a simple cold turns into chronic croup and emergency red-plan mode, you’ll try anything to avoid another steroid burst. If you’re searching for natural remedies for coughing at night, grab a cuppa and keep reading. This mom’s heart-on-her-sleeve guide will walk you through what’s worked for us, step by simple step.

Why We Needed Better Solutions

When searching for natural remedies for coughing at night, you want something gentle but powerful enough to keep you out of the ER. My boys don’t just cough when they get rhinovirus or a run-of-the-mill cold. Within 24 hours, their airways can tighten so badly we’re scrambling to their ER red plan, inhalers in hand, and sometimes even racing down to the ER doors. Relying on oral steroids or big-hospital telehealth visits was leaving me helpless and worried about long-term side effects. And, it is the number one reason doctors question me and push back on me when we are advocating at the office. However, when its a difference of a prescription for $8.99 that can keep my kid out of the ER 80% of the time, vs. the trauma of going to the ER in the middle of the night + countless hours of waiting + $5,000 in medical bill charges each time, I will take it and keep advocating. However, it was time to dig into alternative solutions and add some safe, natural tools to our toolbox while we wait for our root-cause treatment plan to keep us out of this vicious cycle in the first place. Hopefully, that is coming soon.

How I Discovered the Wet Socks Method

This spring, I had five relentless weeks of a barking cough and breathing trouble that urgent care and telehealth just couldn’t fix. I legit, for the first time in a long time, could put myself in my kiddos shoes. It was scary, I was exhausted, and I needed help that I was not getting. I finally booked in with a functional medicine doctor. She recommended two key tactics:

  1. Spongia tosta (an over-the-counter, homeopathic cough remedy tailored to my symptoms)

  2. The wet socks method—yes, you heard me right

She had me wet a pair of cotton socks, chill them in the freezer for two minutes, slip them on my feet in bed, then layer warm wool socks over them. Within 48 hours, my cough vanished. Talk about a mic-drop moment! I couldn’t believe I hadn’t tried it sooner. And, I was devastated I hadn’t. However, now I know, and I could put these to a test with my kiddos too to see if it worked.

Bringing It Home: Trying It on My Kids

Armed with chest rubs, honey, and this new sock trick, I braced myself for the next round of illnesses in our house. With one kiddo in daycare, and the others in elementary school, it is only a matter of time around here. Here’s how we’ve made it part of our sick-day routine:

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

  • Two pairs of socks per child: One pair of thin cotton socks, plus one cozy pair of wool or thick knit socks

  • Natural cough remedy: Depending on what you have, there are plenty of over-the-counter choices that you can select. It’s important to look at the options and your symptoms. For my barking cough, Spongia Tosta was the answer, but that is not always the case. However, we love the Boiron brand if you are looking. Obviously, it’s always best to check with your medical provider before trying any medicines.

  • Chest rub & honey: Choose a non-medicated chest rub and raw honey (over age 1). We love Maty’s Vapor Rub or Badgers. Bonus, these are HSA eligible in a lot of cases so make sure to check. And, we buy our local honey from the farmers market.

Step 2: Prep Before Bed

  1. Hydrate & dose: Give your child a full glass of water, administer the homeopathic cough remedy per instructions, and add a teaspoon of honey before bedtime (if over one). Again, check with your medical provider for other instructions. But, ours recommends this time and time again as a solution, so we love it. Our kids won’t drink tea, but if yours do, this is also a great solution.

  2. Wet the cotton socks: Dampen the thin socks under cool tap water, wring gently so they’re wet but not dripping.

  3. Quick chill: Pop the damp socks in the freezer for 1–2 minutes while you tuck your child into bed. If this is just too much for your kiddo, you can try just really cold water and skip the freezer, but mine handle it fine.

Step 3: Slip on the Socks

  1. Cold first: Have your child put on the chilled cotton socks. Yes, they might squeal at first, but that’s part of the magic!

  2. Warmth on top: Layer the wool socks directly over the cold pair—this creates a gentle circulation boost that helps the immune system & eases congestion.

Step 4: Let It Work Overnight

The contrast between cold and warmth stimulates blood flow to the extremities, encouraging the body to redirect inflammation away from the lungs. My boys have woken up with noticeably softer coughs and clearer breathing more times than I can count.

Step 5: Repeat as Needed

We keep this routine going until the cough eases—sometimes just one night, sometimes two, occasionally we have gone to three if needed. You know your kiddo best, so you be the judge. In the meantime, we stay on our regular inhaler schedules and emergency red plans, but we haven’t set foot inside the ER in two months. That, my friends, is a huge win! Now, don’t get me wrong. We have had to go to the red plan and do the emergency oral steroids twice. But, it would have been more without this option and getting to it early. I am convinced! One of those times, was, unfortunately, on the vacation we are on, and we were out of options. So, again, you know your kid and you know when to escalate and when to keep trying at home.

Other Natural Helpers to Try

  • Humidifier: Run a cool-mist humidifier at night to keep the airways moist. Now, we have done this in the past and just not had great luck with keeping it clean and it getting moldy. If you have a found a great option, we would love for you to share with us!

  • Warm fluids: Herbal teas (chamomile, slippery elm) or bone broth before bed. Again, our kids won’t do this. But, we have tried the onion method, and as an adult, we have done Mullein tinctures and those have been amazing!

  • Elevate the head: A slightly propped pillow can help drainage and reduce night cough. We use this amazing wedge pillow by Kolbs that we found on Amazon 100% of the time because of our airway issues and it has been a life saver. All three of my kids sleep on them nightly, and we bring them in the camper too.

From My Heart to Yours

If you’re looking for natural remedies for coughing at night that really work for both kids and adults, give the wet socks method a try—it might just be the game-changer your family needs. We’re not ditching our ER red plan or inhalers, but we’re leaning into gentler, root-inspired solutions that have kept us out of the ER building and into bed with restful sleep instead.

Share this with your mama friends, bookmark it for the next sniffle season, and let me know if you give it a try. Because sometimes the best cures come straight from another mom who’s been in those ER-parking-lot trenches with you. ❤️
